PA Backcountry Outfitters approaches each hunt as a complete hunting experience rather than simply providing someone to accompany the hunter in the field.

What Is Included

Personal Guide Service

Individualized guide service centered around your tag, your hunt and your goals in Pennsylvania elk country.

Preseason Scouting

Time spent before the season locating elk, evaluating activity and building a plan for the hunt.

Local Elk Knowledge

Experience with Pennsylvania elk country, terrain, access, elk movement and the changing conditions that can affect a hunt.

Bull Evaluation

For bull hunters, experienced guide input can help with evaluating animals and making informed decisions when opportunities develop.

Hunt Strategy

A hunting plan based on your season, weapon, physical ability, weather, terrain and current elk activity.

Tracking and Recovery

Guide assistance does not end with the shot. Tracking, recovery and proper field care are important parts of completing the hunt.

Every Pennsylvania Elk Hunt Is Different

There is no single formula that fits every elk hunter. A bull tag, cow tag, archery hunt and firearm hunt can each require a different approach.

Weather, terrain, hunting pressure, elk movement and the hunter's own abilities can also change how the hunt develops.

That is why PA Backcountry Outfitters focuses on personalized service rather than treating every hunter and every elk tag exactly the same.

Why Preseason Scouting Matters

Successful elk hunts are often built before the season begins. Knowing where animals have been spending time, understanding travel patterns and recognizing changes in elk activity can help the guide team develop a starting plan.

Elk can move and conditions can change quickly, so scouting does not guarantee where an animal will be found. It does, however, provide valuable information that can help guide decisions once the hunt begins.

Experienced Pennsylvania Elk Guides

The PA Backcountry Outfitters guide team brings years of Pennsylvania elk hunting and guiding experience to every hunt.

Senior Guide Dean Carper has professionally guided Pennsylvania elk hunters since 2010 and has been involved in approximately 45 successful Pennsylvania elk hunts. He brings extensive knowledge of Pennsylvania elk country, scouting and bull evaluation.

Owner and guide Matt Lutz has approximately 10 years of elk guiding experience and served as guide for David Kammerdiener's 2022 Dagger Bull hunt, which resulted in Pennsylvania's No. 1 nontypical archery elk.

You can learn more about the team on our Pennsylvania Elk Guides page and review documented hunt history on our Success and Guide History page.
